Review – Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge – Istanbul

2
This entry is part 5 of 12 in the series Lounge Reviews

I have to admit that the thing I was looking forward to the most on this trip was a lounge … but not just any lounge, the Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge in Istanbul.  The CIP stands for Commercially Important Person, the European equivalent to North America’s VIP and do they ever pull out all the stops to make their CIPs feel important.

First, the sheer size of the lounge is mind blowing.  60,000 square feet spread across 2 gorgeous levels of pure traveler heaven.  The lounges that I have been to in the past can’t hold a candle to this place, in fact, this is the first lounge that has been a destination for me.  We showed up an incredible 7 hours before our flight just to experience this lounge and I have to tell you, that time went by WAY too fast.

When you enter, you place your boarding pass on an automated reader which determines if you can enter or not.  Once the gates open, I swear I heard angels sing.

The first sight you are greeted with is a library complete with a pool table.  All rooms at the entrance are separated by circular arches giving each room a feeling of grandeur.  The CIP lounge is not only beautiful but it is also very functional.

20160531_185333_HDR

As you enter, on your right hand side, you see an area where you can store your luggage.  Now I have been in lounges that have luggage storage but this is the first one that I have been to that have clear compartments that are secured by a lock code of your own choosing.  There’s something freeing about not having to worry about your bags so you can enjoy SkyTrax’s Best Business Class Lounge in the world (2015).

20160531_185346_HDR

Further on you will see the movie theatre complete with all you can eat popcorn.  Granted, it’s not a full on movie theatre but how many lounges have anything close to this?  The few times I poked my head in, they were playing concerts and most people used the room as a place to catch some z’s.

20160531_185701_HDR

Further in, we start to see the thing that this lounge is known for, excellent food being prepared fresh 24 hours a day.  The catering at the lounge, like on the flights, is undertaken by Do & Co, an Austrian catering company known for excellent food.  While this lounge can service up to 2,000 people daily, it was very well run and I didn’t feel like it was crowded during my time there.

20160531_185808_HDR

One of the best items up for grabs in terms of food was their freshly made pide (Turkish pizza).  I’m not sure what I ate exactly but it was delicious and there was plenty of it.  As soon as the pizza came out of the oven, it was cut up and placed on the tray you see below.  They were snapped up quite quickly with many people taking 4-5 slices at a time but not to worry, this station was run like clockwork with new pides being baked and cut as quickly as they were being taken.

20160531_185827_HDR

Towards the end of the hall, just before the beautiful stairwell, you will find the showering area for the upstairs.  I desperately wanted to take a shower but was informed that there was a waiting list of a few people for the showers.  The attendant suggested that I try the showers downstairs as there is another shower areas which boast more showers than the upstairs location.

20160531_185259_HDR

Prior to going down to grab a shower, I went to look at the rest of the upstairs area.  There are so many distinct areas of this lounge that it takes a while to get your bearings.  From walls of TVs, to an unreal selection of both soft drinks and liquor, this lounge has it all … and this is just the upper level.

20160531_185726_HDR

On the upper level, you will also find the Miles & Smiles Heroes Play Area for kids.  Turkish Airlines does a good job of keeping the kids area clean by asking their patrons to slip on disposable slippers.  There is also a room in the back where babies, infants and toddlers can catch a nap in a crib, a godsend for those late night flights.

20160531_185901_HDR

As you can tell from the pictures, the architectural aesthetic of this lounge is nothing short of incredible.  It is simply stunning.

If the hot food selections don’t strike your fancy, why not try the salad bar, complete with almost any dressing you can think of.

The staircase between the two floors is also something that should not be missed.  Now stairs tend to be quite boring but Turkish Airlines took the opportunity to extend their design language from the top level to the bottom level using this beautiful staircase as the transition piece and it really works.  Every turn I took in this lounge was a unique sense of discovery combined with wonder.

20160531_183843_HDR

As soon as you get to the bottom level, you are greeted with a seating area that I liken to being in a park.  It’s unlike anything I have ever seen and just gorgeous.

The bottom level also has its share of freshly made floor.  In fact, that’s one of the things that I absolutely LOVE about this lounge.  Every area has its own specialty.  For example, on the bottom floor, you find Turkish Dumplings being served up fresh along with kabobs and roasted vegetables.  We were there over the lunch and dinner hour so I can’t speak to breakfast but I’m sure it’s just as delicious as the food we experienced.

I don’t drink very much but from what I’ve seen in bars, I believe that this is a pretty diverse range of alcohol for those wishing to partake.

Next to the coffee station, where you can get any sort of fancy coffee drink (cappuccino, espresso, caffe latte, etc.) there is a dessert selection that is pretty impressive.  You can also find Turkish Delights here as well.  They were behind the coffee bar when we were there so they were a bit hidden away.  A word to the wise, find them!

20160531_183850_HDR

For those that want to catch up on email or simply surf the web, there are multiple computer stations around.  I only saw Macs and a word of warning, the keyboards are set up for the Turkish language (as you would expect), so many of the keyboard shortcuts you are used to may take some hunting.  I had a hell of a time finding the @ key.

20160531_184002_HDR

Of course, the lounge has plenty of comfortable seating as demonstrated by my lovely daughter.

20160531_184035_HDR

And of course, the lower level also needs a player grande piano.

20160531_184146_HDR

The lower level had more entertainment on offer than the upper level in my opinion.  Here you will find Playstation games, a remote control car racetrack as well as a golf simulator.  Yes, a golf simulator.  With everything that this lounge has, I was surprised not to find a bowling alley.

20160531_184250_HDR

I neglected to take pictures of the shower area as my phone was about to die but the shower rooms are very clean and feature a rain shower and plenty of fluffy towels.

The lounge also features bedrooms for those connecting in Istanbul.  The rules to get one of these rooms is strictly enforced to allow for those that need the rooms to have access to them.  In order to get into the room, you must have a layover in IST between 4 and 7 hours.  The longest you can stay in the room is 6 hours.  Because we had a stopover in Istanbul, we did not qualify to reserve a bedroom.  For those that fall outside the rules, you can always find a space to sleep in the theatre!

As I mentioned, we spent 7 hours in the lounge and it felt like 2.  Honestly, if you find yourself in Istanbul on a layover, find your way to this lounge.  We walked away feeling refreshed, rested and very full.  Ready for our flight from Istanbul to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Review – Turkish Airlines A330-300 – Montreal to Istanbul – Business Class

6

I have to admit that Istanbul has always been on my bucket list of cities to visit but on this particular day, I was just as excited to fly Turkish Airlines Business Class for the first time.  It seems that airlines all around the world just get it right compared to our North American brethren.  Both the hard and soft product on European, Asian and Middle Eastern Airlines just seem to be in another league.  There’s a certain romance to flying non-North American airlines and I was going to get to experience it for the first time.

20160527_220109_HDR

As a Business Class passenger, we were given priority boarding on the flight so I took the opportunity (like a kid in a candy store) to rush down the jet bridge to get some photos of myself and my family in an empty cabin.

20160527_220455_HDR

20160527_220516_HDRUpon boarding, we were provided with a refreshing welcome drink which was Turkish Airlines signature lemonade.  I went with the strawberry lemonade and it was absolutely delicious.  A lot of airlines offer champagne as a welcome drink but I’m not much into wine/champagne so it’s a bit lost on me.

20160527_221159_HDR-e1466742126577

While it’s a given that Business Class provides a lot of room that you don’t see in economy, I thought I would share with you just how much extra room there is.

One of the first things that you are given after the welcome drink and a refreshing wet towel is the brochure detailing the Bocha Sleeping Set that is provided to make your seat into a very comfortable bed.

20160527_222159_HDR

On this particular flight, we had access to satellite internet and live TV.  I managed to watch the Raptors get eliminated by the Cavs in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

As far as internet goes, it was complimentary for Business Class travelers and speeds were pretty impressive.

Next thing to be provided was the amenity kit.  Now I have to admit that amenity kits are something that I lusted after when I dreamed of flying Business Class but I have come to realize that the only thing I really care about is the bag that the amenities come in because I can reuse those later for my toiletries.

On flights inbound to Turkey, Cerruti kits are provided to passengers and come with the standard fare of a toothbrush, toothpaste, brush/comb, hand cream, lip balm, ear plug, shoe horn, eye mask and socks.  Additionally, you are provided with stickers that help the flight attendants know whether or not to wake you for breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, prior to ordering your dinner, you are provided with a menu to denote what you would like for breakfast if you elect to be woken.

20160528_000159_HDR

Much like a cruise, you can eat as much as you want (within reason).  If you want an omelette AND fried eggs, go nuts.  Just make your selection and everything will be brought to you about an hour to an hour and half prior to landing.

Next we were provided with the wine/liqueur and dinner menu.  I must admit that I’m not much of drinker so I have no real idea if these wines are any good or not but at least you aren’t pulling out your credit card to drink them.

20160528_000239_HDR-e1466744498664

Apologies for the out of focus pictures but as you can see, the selection is pretty extensive.

20160528_000744_HDR

Turkish Airlines is catered by Do and Co, an Austrian catering company that is well known for their high quality of food.  I can attest that Turkish Airlines has the best food I have tasted in the air and are very good at making the meal an experience to remember.

You are provide a mezze to start and everything tasted delicious.

20160528_002346_HDR

While you are awaiting the rest of your food, you are provided with your drink and warm nuts.  As you can tell from the photograph, they don’t short pour anything.  I believe I had half a bottle of wine in that glass.

20160528_002556_HDR

As I was feeling a little run down, I also opted for a “wellness tea” which is served in a ceramic mug with a metal holder.  While it is truly a work of art, the functionality of the handle leaves a lot to be desired.

20160528_003135_HDR

Another nice thing about having dinner with Turkish is that you are provided with a battery powered flickering candle in a paper holder so that you can have a candlelight dinner in the sky.

The other thing that I found charming was that the salt and pepper shakers were in the shape of turrets that adorn the mosques in Turkey.  They were also magnetic so that they don’t rattle off your tray in during moments of turbulence.

20160528_004021_HDR

Forgetting to photograph the menu means that I can’t really tell you exactly what I ate but I do remember that the tomato soup was fantastic.  Normally, this is something I would steer clear of on the ground but there is something about soup that lends itself well to being in a pressurized aluminum tube hurtling around the world at 32,000 feet.

20160528_005735_HDR

The main course was steak and unfortunately it was a bit dry, though I have had worse steaks on the ground.  I would recommend that if you fly Business or First, to skip the steak.  More often than not doesn’t turn out great.  On the positive side, the meal was presented beautifully.  You won’t see a thin plastic sheet over a microwaved meal like you sometimes get in economy (if you’re lucky).

20160528_010356_HDR

Dessert was pushed around on a cart and you choose what you want.  I went with the strawberry ice cream and honey drenched baklava.  I have to say that the dessert was delicious if not a bit overly sweet, plus who doesn’t love the novelty of eating ice cream in the sky? 20160528_012848_HDRAfter dinner, I changed into pajamas and the flight attendants transformed my seat into a bed.  I was pretty exhausted at this point so I didn’t get any pictures of the bed but you can trust me when I say, it was VERY comfortable.  So comfortable in fact that I woke up 30 minutes outside of Istanbul.

20160528_153611_HDROne of the curious things about landing in Istanbul is that many of the flights seem to be serviced by air stairs rather than a jet bridge.  I wasn’t too mad because I got to get up close and personal with the bird that flew us 7,700 kms.

Overall, this was an excellent flight.  The only thing that I can say that might be viewed as a negative is that due to the extravagance of the dinner service, it often takes 2.5 – 3 hours to complete the entire service, which if you take off at 11:30pm, like we did, might a bit long.  Luckily, I woke up refreshed and ready to explore Istanbul.

Review – National Bank Lounge – Montreal

0
This entry is part 4 of 12 in the series Lounge Reviews

On this trip, I ran into two terrible lounges.  This is one of them.

On the surface, this lounge is fine.  The seating is comfortable, there are decent food options, there’s free booze as well as magazines and newspapers.  The thing that absolutely destroys my opinion of this lounge is how busy it is.  These pictures were from 9:05pm … not something you would expect.

I love going to lounges because it gives me a quiet reprieve from the throngs of people that hang out at the departure gate.  It is supposed to be a sanctuary, a place to relax.  When a lounge is this full, I would almost prefer to find an unused gate to hang out at.

We had to wait about 15 minutes to get a seat somewhere and when we finally got an opportunity, it was for 1 seat and we needed 3.

20160527_205948_hdr.jpg

20160527_205954_hdr.jpg

I later found out that ANYONE that has the National Bank World Elite Mastercard can access this lounge and bring in a guest.  Their card normally has a $150 annual fee but the current promotion has the FIRST YEAR FREE, which means that anyone and their dog can access this lounge.  Couple this with the fact that you can access this lounge with Priority Pass (which we did) AND it serves as the overflow for Star Alliance, One World, Air Transat and others, this lounge is constantly a nightmare.

If my wife and daughter hadn’t left the lounge to go shopping in Duty Free and left me with all the bags, I would have certainly left the lounge.

I’m all for having lounge benefits for premium card holders, but at the very least limit the number of times they can access the lounge based on the size of the facility.

Bottom line, don’t come to this lounge and expect anything but pure chaos.

Review – Maple Leaf Lounge – Montreal

0
This entry is part 3 of 12 in the series Lounge Reviews

After a nice day exploring Montreal, we headed to Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport to catch our flight to Istanbul but first, we decided to check out some lounges.

The first lounge we went to was the Maple Leaf Lounge and in my opinion, while a lot smaller, the lounge was much nicer than the MLL in Toronto.  The MLL in YUL definitely has a much more peaceful and serene feel to it, which is key in my opinion … but once again, no showers!

20160527_202251_hdr.jpg

The room has a clean look and even though we arrived at the lounge about 1 hour before closing, there were still lots of hot food items to choose from, of which was a nice tortellini dish that was liberal on the cheese … something especially handy if you have a kid that loves pasta with cheese.  The only disappointment with this lounge was that it closed too early (2 hours before the last AC departure) so we had to make our way to another lounge to kill an additional hour.  And that lounge was a nightmare!  More on that in the next lounge review.

Of the MLLs that I have visited, this is probably my favorite as it was the most relaxing but caveat emptor, I have read some reviews that say that this lounge can become quit crowded as well.  Perhaps we were just lucky with our timing.
